What Is The One Book Everyone In Your Company Should Read?

I currently have ten books on my list for CEOs to read. They include the books you would expect including Clayton Christensen’s masterpiece, The Innovator’s Dilemma.

The Innovator’s Dilemma is a great book. It’s like the bible for startups. However, if you were to ask me for books I would like all the employees of my company to read, there would be two very similar books:

A. Crucial Converasations by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Al Switzler, and Ron McMillan.

B. Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.

The reason I would choose Crucial Conversations and Never Split the Difference is because these two books will help your employees communicate better. Improved communication helps your company in so many different ways including:

• Improved performance
• Improved morale
• Improved motivation
• Improved employee retention

To me, these two books are two sides of the same coin. Crucial Conversations was developed based on interviews the authors did with business executives.

The authors wanted to understand and decode how some executives were so much more influential than other executives. The result was a blueprint for how to communicate especially when a conversation turns “crucial.”

The subtitle of Crucial Conversations says it all: Tools For Talking When The Stakes Are High. You’ll definitely get tools and a methodology to follow if you read this book.

Never Split the Difference was written by Chris Voss. Voss is the former lead hostage negotiator for the FBI. I don’t know how much more crucial a conversation can become when you are negotiating for someone’s life.

Yes, Never Split the Difference is about negotiating, and you and your team will certainly learn some very valuable negotiating techniques. However, you and your will also learn advanced communications skills from the book.

I read and read Crucial Conversations and Never Split the Difference all the time. I find myself picking up subtle nuances each time I reread these books.
